For the past 10 years I have been studying and reading tarot. In the early years, I bought my first Raider Waite deck at 18 and went to workshops, joined tarot groups and found a mentor. Through my extensive travels in my early years, I brought my tarot cards with me and looked for one to one mentorship and also joining a group. Tarot has opened me up to meeting many people from all walks of life and no tarot reading is the same.
I first encountered tarot cards when I was at a friend’s house one Halloween night. Her mother was a tarot card reader and had the tarot cards spread put on the table. I picked out 3 cards; the devil, the tower and the death card. I got very frightened as the cards scared me, particularly the death card. However looking back at the cards as an experienced tarot reader I can see that the cards were talking about breaking the chains for a new opportunity and starting fresh.
After my experience, I started trying to read the deck of playing cards but it wasn’t until about 3 years later I bought my own tarot deck. Throughout the years I have had many decks, finding the right deck is like meeting a friend, you have to form a bond with your cards. I can read for myself and I view tarot as a way to explore the subconscious and act as a guiding tool for any areas in your life if you’re looking for a perspective and a pathway to a solution. Carl Jung explored tarot card reading in his sessions with his clients as a way to unlock the subconscious, as tarot tells a story and creates patterns.
I don’t view tarot necessarily as a means to predict the future, tarot offers a person the opportunity to see an overview of their life and a way to live a life better. The stereotype of the fortune teller with the crystal ball and the headscarf is not a definition of a tarot reader. Tarot cards tell a story and there is not one way to read tarot cards. Tarot cards come in a variety of different packs and there a number of spreads to use for a reading. Every tarot card reader has their own style and method.
In my opinion, tarot is about the deeper psychological symbols of the tarot and how we can apply them to everyday life. Don’t go to a reading expecting that you’ll be told who your soul mate is or how many kids you’ll have. Got to a reading with the viewpoint that it brings about more open minded questions more so than offering answers.
There’s a joke in Buddhism regarding predicting the future; an astrologer saw Buddha on a beach and walked over to him. The astrologer asked Buddha “how do I predict the future?” Buddha replied “turn around and see your footprints in the sand. 999/1000 times people are predictable.” I am no prophet, I just see the shadows of ghosts.
When you come to me for a tarot reading, it’s not about predicting the future, as your reader I’m here as a conduit to give you spiritual guidance and help you connect to your own inner wisdom. During a reading, I will look at the past, present and future based on your current path and the cards will show you an understanding of your situation and determine the best course of action.
When coming to me for a tarot card reading, it will be an enlightening experience of discovering divine wisdom, guidance and self- empowerment. Going to a tarot reading is like going to yoga practice or meditation. Don’t view tarot card reading as a means to tell your future, see it as a way to increase awareness for you innermost thought. Tarot is not a science, it’s an art.
